The trailer for D.J. Caruso‘s upcoming sci-fi thriller I Am Number Four has debuted online. The film seems to take its visual cues from Catherine Hardwicke‘s Twilight, which will be great news for its target audience, and horrifying news for the rest of the cinema-going public.

I Am Number Four is based on James Frey (yes, that James Frey) and Jobie Hughes’ novel of the same name. It is the first of a planned six-book series, published under the alias Pittacus Lore.

Here is the film’s official plot synopsis from Yahoo:

An extraordinary young man, John Smith, is a fugitive on the run from ruthless enemies sent to destroy him. Changing his identity, moving from town to town with his guardian Henri, John is always the new kid with no ties to his past. In the small Ohio town he now calls home, John encounters unexpected, life-changing events — his first love, powerful new abilities and a connection to the others who share his incredible destiny.

I’m on the fence when it comes to Caruso. Although I admired his work on Disturbia, his 2008 follow up Eagle Eye was almost hilariously inept.

Regardless, I’m a little disappointed by the lack of visual flair here. Perhaps it’s simply the trailer, which has clearly been put together to entice all the Twihards who will be eager to pass the time until Breaking Dawn arrives debuts at the end of 2011.

I Am Number Four stars Alex Pettyfer, Teresa Palmer, Dianna Agron and Timothy Olyphant. It arrives in Australian cinemas March 10, 2011.

Discuss: Is this just Twi-lite?
